Niacinamide adenine dinucleotide (abbreviated NAD), or codehydrogenase I or coenzyme I. In mammals, there are two types of oxidation (NAD+) and reducing (NADH). The oxidation (NAD+) has the maximum ultraviolet absorption spectrum at 260nm. Through various deaminases, the NAD+ receives a hydrogen atom and an electron from the substrate and becomes the reducing (NADH), and has the maximum absorption at 340nm. Beta-niacinamide adenine dinucleotide is used as a coenzyme in REDOX reactions, as a donor of the ribose portion of ADP in ADP ribosylation reactions, and as a precursor of the second messenger molecule cyclic ADP ribose. Beta-niacinamide adenine dinucleotides also act as substrates for bacterial DNA ligases and a group of enzymes called sirtuins, which use NAD+ to remove acetyl groups from proteins.
