Menthol is a terpenoid organic compound extracted from the leaves and stems of Mentha mint. It is the main ingredient in peppermint and peppermint essential oils. Menthol generally has two isomers (D-type and L-type), natural menthol is mainly L-isomer (L-menthol), and menthol generally refers to racemic menthol (DL-menthol). Menthol can be used as a flavoring agent in toothpaste, perfume, beverage and candy. It is used as a stimulating drug in medicine, acts on the skin or mucous membrane, and has a cooling and antipruritic effect. Oral administration can be used as a carminative for headaches and inflammation of the nose, pharynx, and laryngitis. Its esters are also used in fragrances and medicines.
