Methionine is an essential amino acid in all metazoans. Along with cysteine, methionine is one of two sulfur-containing proteinogenic amino acids. It is the only sulfur-containing essential amino acid for humans, with two types: L-type and D-type. It is closely related to the metabolism of various sulfur-containing compounds (such as proteins) in the body and is the main source of active methyl and sulfur in the body. DL-methionine can be produced chemically. Methionine is a strong liver detoxifier and growth promoter. When methionine is lacking, it can cause loss of appetite. Methionine is widely used in nutritional supplements and livestock feeds. Since methionine is easily absorbed by chickens and converted into chicken protein, adding methionine to chicken feeds can reduce feed consumption and make chickens grow soundly.
