Sodium saccharin, also known as saccharin, scientific name o-sulfonylbenzimide sodium salt. White prismatic crystals. Molecular weight 205.17. Melting point 226~231 °c. Odorless or slightly aromatic, extremely sweet and bitter, slowly weathered in the air, losing about half of the crystal water and becoming a white powder. The sweetness of dilute aqueous solution is equivalent to 300~500 times of sugar, and the sweetness threshold is about 0.00048%. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol. Its thermal stability in aqueous solution is better than that of saccharin, and there is no change when heated at 100 °C for 2h. The aqueous solution is left for a long time, and the sweetness slowly decreases. It is mainly used as an edible sweetener. It is not decomposed in the human body, excreted with urine, and has no nutritional value. It is prepared from ph thalic an hydride as raw material.
