The 7-dehydrocholesterol generated after cholesterol dehydrogenation can be irradiated with ultraviolet rays to form cholecalciferol, so that is to say, the vitamin D of cholecalciferol was originally 7-dehydrocholesterol. Cholecalciferol forms 25-hydroxycholecalciferol through the action of hydroxylase in the liver, and is then hydroxylated into 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol in the kidney. The activity of this substance is 50% higher than that of cholecalciferol , proven to be the true active form of vitamin D in the body. And 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol is a hormone secreted by the kidneys, so cholecalciferol is actually a prohormone.
