Chitosan is a sugar extracted from the hard exoskeleton of shellfish, including crabs, lobsters and shrimps. It is used in medicine.
Chitosan is used to treat obesity, high cholesterol and Crohn's disease. It is also used to treat complications frequently faced by patients with dialysis kidney failure, including high cholesterol, "tired blood" (anemia), lack of physical strength and appetite, and trouble sleeping (insomnia).
Some people apply chitosan directly to the gums to treat inflammation that can cause tooth loss (periodontitis), or use chewing gum containing chitosan to prevent "tooth decay" (tooth decay).
To help "donor tissues" rebuild themselves, plastic surgeons sometimes apply chitosan directly where they take out the tissue for use elsewhere.
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, chitosan is used as a filler for tablets; as a carrier for controlled-release drugs; to improve the dissolution of certain drugs; and to mask the bitter taste in oral solutions.
