Colorless monoclinic sheet crystal. Melting point 53-57°C. Soluble in water, ethanol and ether. Soluble in water, ethanol and ether.1ml of water can dissolve chlor alhydrate: 2.4g at 0ºC; 8.3g at 25ºC; 14.3g at 40ºC.1g of chlor alhydrate can be dissolved in: 1.3ml of ethanol, 2ml of chloro form, 1.5ml of ether.

Function:
1.Hypnotic drug, intermediate of DDT.
2.Chlor alhydrate can be used for silver determination and testing; organic synthesis; manufacture of trichloro acetic acid, DDT, etc.; nickel-plating brightener and grain refiner.
3. Used as nickel plating intermediates, also used as medicine and pesticide intermediates, used in the production of trichlorfon, herbicides and other pesticides intermediates. It is used as half-bright nickel brightener to adjust the potential difference between bright nickel and half-bright nickel. Chlor alhydrate can be used as hypnotic and anticonvulsant, used for insomnia, restlessness and convulsions.
4. Used as pesticide, pharmaceutical intermediates, also used in the preparation of chloro form, trichloro ace taldehyde and so on.
Application:
1. Chloral hy drate is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia and as a sedative before minor medical or dental treatment.
2. In therapeutic doses for insomnia, chloral hydrat is effective within 20 to 60 minutes. In humans it is metabolized within 7 hours into trichloroethanol and trichloroethanol glucuronide by erythrocytes and plasma esterases and into trichloroaceti acid in 4 to 5 days.
3. Chloral hy drate is a starting point for the synthesis of other organic compounds. Chloral hy drate is the starting material for the production of chloral, which is produced by the distillation of a mixture of chloral hydrat and sulfuric acid, which serves as the desiccant.
4. Chloral hy drate is used to synthesize isatin. In this synthesis, chloral hydrat reacts with anilin and hydroxylamine to give a condensation product which cyclicizes in sulfuric acid to give the target compound.
