Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) is an annual herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. The stem is branched near the base, the leaves are pinnately split, and the lobes are oblong or lanceolate; the tongue-shaped flowers are yellow or dark orange-yellow, with long claws at the base, and the corolla of the tubular flowers is yellow; the achenes are linear and slightly hairy. Flowering period is July-September.
Lutein also known as xanthophyll, co-exists with zeaxanthin in nature. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the main components of plant pigments in corn, vegetables, fruits, flowers and other plants. They are also the main pigments in the macular area of the human retina.
