Estradiol is a steroid estrogen. have α,β Two types, α Type A has strong physiological effects. Wintersteiner et al. (1935) have extracted it from pregnant horse urine and can also be obtained from pregnant woman urine, human placenta, pig ovaries, etc. It is also present in the testis or urine of male horses. Because it has a strong sex hormone effect, it is believed that it or its esters are actually the most important sex hormone secreted by the ovaries.

Circulating estradiol enters the cell nucleus where it can bind to two types of receptors, ERα or ERβ. The complexes act as nuclear transcription factors by binding to an ERE (estrogen response element) and stimulating gene transcription which leads to increases in cellular proteins that, by increasing neural transmission and function, enhance cognitive function.
Estradiol is used in form of an ethanolic solution for topical application on the scalp. Similarly to other drugs against alopecia, topical or oral, it has to be applied continuously to prevent further hair loss. Regrowth of hair that was already lost is only possible to a limited extent.
