Psyllium husk also simply called psyllium are parts of the seeds of the plant Plantago ovata of the genus Plantago which native to India but can be found elsewhere. Psyllium husks are hygroscopic, capable of absorbing fluids primarily used as bulk forming laxative and a good source of dietary fiber and used commercially to produce mucilage.

The main characteristics of Psyllium seed shell powder after processing and grinding, can absorb expansion of about 50 times, the seed shell contains soluble and insoluble fiber, the ratio of about 3:1, common in Europe and the United States high-fiber diet, is used as a fiber supplement. Common components of dietary fiber include psyllium husk, oat fiber, and wheat fiber. The shell of the seed is rich in Mucilage (European hydrophilic gum), which is composed of gum aldose, xylose, semi-latex uronic acid, semi-dry fatty oil and a small amount of coral glycoside (Aucubine). The fiber content of the husk is 80%, while the fiber content of other fiber-rich cereals such as oats and wheat is only 15% and 10%, respectively. Other nutrients mainly include glucoside, protein, polysaccharide, vitamin B1 and choline. Psyllium fiber is mainly composed of hemicellulose, a complex carbohydrate that is widely found in grains, fruits and vegetables. Hemicellulose is not digested by the human body, but it can be partially broken down in the colon and benefits intestinal probiotics. Psyllium fiber is not digested in the human digestive tract, stomach and small intestine, and is only partially digested by bacteria in the large intestine and rectum. The former seed fiber is a natural plant fiber source, which can absorb water and expand about 50 times to form a jelly-like viscous substance, and has the reputation of "the king of gum on land".
