Azelaic acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula C9H16O4. It appears as a white to slightly yellow monoclinic crystal, needle like crystal, or powder. Used as a plasticizer and in alkyd resins, paints, and chemical synthesis. Irritating to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and upper respiratory tract, inhalation or ingestion is harmful to the body. It is harmful to the environment and can cause pollution to water and atmosphere.

This product has no systemic adverse reactions. Local skin irritation mainly includes erythema, itching, scales, and burning sensation, with an incidence rate of 5% to 10%. It is generally mild and transient, and gradually disappears 2-4 weeks after treatment. Compared with ordinary anti acne drugs, this product is well tolerated. In addition, this product is less prone to drug resistance, teratogenic effects through the mucosa and skin, and potential endocrine imbalances.

Functions&Application

Pharmacological action :
1. Directly inhibit and kill bacteria on the surface of the skin and inside the hair follicles, eliminating pathogens;
2. Inhibiting the production and action of reactive oxygen species is beneficial for anti-inflammatory effects;
3. Reduce the synthesis of filamentous keratin to prevent excessive keratinization of hair follicles;
4. Destroy cellular mitochondrial respiration, inhibit cell synthesis, and thus inhibit cell proliferation.

External antibacterial agent: It has inhibitory and killing effects on various aerobic and anaerobic bacteria on the skin. Local use of 20% azelaic acid ointment can significantly reduce the growth of skin bacteria in follicles, and reduce the free fatty acid content of skin surface lipids.

Anti keratinization: This product has anti keratinization effects on normal skin and acne infected skin, and its principle of action is to reduce excessive keratinization of follicles.

Anti proliferative and anti cytotoxic effects: Studies have shown that in vitro, when melanoma cells from the skin or choroid or skin biopsy tissues from patients with malignant moles or skin melanoma are placed in azelaic acid solution (≤ 100nmol/L), selective and significant mitochondrial swelling, formation of vacuoles, and aggregation of cytoplasmic lipid particles occur.

Reduce pigmentation and reduce black spot damage:This product can significantly reduce the number of acne, papules, and pustules in patients with mild to moderate acne.

Application:

1. Mainly used for the production of dioctyl azelaite plasticizer, and can also be used as a raw material for the production of spices, lubricants, oils, and polyamide resins.

2. Azelaic acid has antibacterial properties and can be used as a food preservative. Using it in mouthwash is beneficial for the prevention and treatment of dental caries, while using it in soap can avoid surface cracking of the soap body. It has good permeability to the skin, and the use of cream cosmetics can increase the skin's absorption function. There are various medicinal effects available in skin disease ointments. It has functions of brightening and whitening the skin. Azelaic acid or its zinc salt is used in combination with vitamin B6 as a hair care product, suitable for the treatment of hormonal alopecia in men with strong endocrine function, while also stimulating hair growth.
