Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant that is odorless and has a burning sensation after tasting. It is extracted from the dried near-ripe or mature fruits of the piperaceae plant pepper (Piper nigrum L.). It has a good antagonistic effect on experimental electroconvulsions in mice, and is effective against convulsions and audiogenic attacks caused by pentylenetetrazol, picrotoxin, stry chnine, intraventricular injection of tubocurarine, glutamate, etc. There are varying degrees of antagonism. It is also effective in certain types of epilepsy. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrum.
