Cytosine, scientific name 4-amino-2-carbonylpyrimidine, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C4H5N3O. It is one of the main base components in nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Cytosine can be synthesized from dimethyl uracil, and chloroacetic acid as raw materials. Used as a pharmaceutical intermediate.

Abbreviated as C. One of the pyrimidine type bases in nucleic acid. It exists in DNA and RNA. In plant DNA, in addition to cytosine, there is also a small amount of 5-methylcytosine. In the double helix of DNA, cytosine on one strand pairs with guanine on the other strand, forming three hydrogen bonds between molecules. This hydrogen bond between base complementary pairs is one of the important forces for the stability of DNA double helix. Cytosine nucleoside and cytosine nucleotide can both be used as drugs to elevate white blood cells. It can be synthesized from dimethyl uracil, and chloroacetic acid as raw materials.

Lose water at 100 ºC, turn brown at 300 ºC, decompose at 320-325 ºC. 1g of product is soluble in 130ml of water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in ether. At pH 2, the maximum absorption wavelength is 276nm, the molar absorption coefficient is 10000, the minimum absorption wavelength is 238nm, and the absorbance ratio is A250/A260=0.48, A280/A260=1.53, and A290/A260=0.78.
