It was originally isolated from the bark of evergreen plants of the Rhamnaceae growing in Eastern Africa, but the main source is extracted and purified from the bark of birch .  BA and its derivatives have shown great potential in anti-cancer and HIV treatment, and play an important role in the body's anti-oxidative damage and immune regulation process. It is a class of promising drug lead compounds.
