The chemical structures of astaxanthin, lutein, and beta carotene are very similar, but astaxanthin has more OH groups and C=O groups, which greatly enhances the hydrophilicity of the molecule, and the overall molecular hydrophilicity: Astaxanthin > leaf Flavin > β-carotene, which makes astaxanthin both lipophilic and hydrophilic, enabling it to cross the double-layer phospholipid structure of the cell membrane, so it has an antioxidant effect on both inside and outside the cell.
