Carnauba wax is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian palm and is mainly composed of wax esters, higher alcohols, hydrocarbons and resinous substances. It is light brown to grayish yellow powder, flakes or irregularly shaped and hard and brittle wax blocks. It has a mild and special odor, but is almost tasteless. The saponification value is 78~95, the iodine value is 5~14, and carnauba wax does not go rancid. Soluble in warm chloroform and warm toluene, slightly soluble in boiling ethanol (95%), almost insoluble in water,
Carnauba wax is a complex mixture mainly composed of esters of acids and hydroxy acids, mostly fatty acid esters, hydroxy fatty acid esters, p-methoxycinnamate, p-hydroxycinnamate diesters, the fatty chain length It varies, but C26 and C32 alcohols are the most common. Also contains acids, oxidized polyols, hydrocarbons, resin-like substances and water.
