Oleanolic acid or oleanic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid related to betulinic acid. It is widely distributed in food and plants where it exists as a free acid or as an aglycone of triterpenoid saponins.
Oleanolic acid biosynthesis starts with mevalonate to create squalene. Squalene monooxygenase in the next step oxidases the squalene and forms an epoxide resulting in 2,3-oxidosqualene.Beta-amyrin synthase creates beta-amyrin by a ring formation cascade.After the formation of beta amyrin, CYP716AATR2, also known as a cytochrome p450 enzyme, oxidizes carbon 28 turning it into alcohol.CYP716AATR2 converts the alcohol to aldehyde and finally to a carboxylic acid forming oleanolic acid.

Function:
1. Oleanolic acid has the functions of anti-inflammatory, sedative, cardiotonic, diuretic, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, protecting liver and reducing enzymes, enhancing immunity and inhibiting the growth of S180 tumor strain.
2. Oleanolic acid has a protective effect on chromosome damage and a preventive effect on experimental atherosclerosis. It is clinically used for the treatment of infectious acute jaundice hepatitis and chronic viral hepatitis.
3. Oleanolic acid has the effect of inhibiting the proliferation of liver fibrosis. In the rats with liver fibrosis treated with oleanolic acid, the hyperplasia of liver fibrosis was severe and significantly alleviated, and the content of hepatic collagen decreased, suggesting that it has the effect of preventing and treating liver cirrhosis.
4. Reducing the level of tyrosine in brain homogenate of liver cirrhosis rats: Because the level of tyrosine in brain homogenate is significantly decreased, it can inhibit the generation of pseudo-neurotransmitters, so it is beneficial to the prevention and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
5. Oleanolic acid capsules are non-prescription drugs for liver disease adjuvant drugs, which are used for the adjuvant treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis. It has a certain protective effect on liver damage, can reduce the elevated serum alanine aminotransferase, promote liver cell regeneration, and accelerate the repair of necrotic tissue.
