α-Arbutin INCI name Alpha-Arbutin (CAS 84380-01-8; EC 283-934-3) with the chemical name 4-Hydroxyphenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside is a cosmetic ingredient. It is used as antioxidant, for skin bleaching and skin conditioning. The structurally related compound beta-Arbutin (CAS 497-76-7) is also used as a depigmentating agent in cosmetic products.
The whitening mechanism of α-arbutin directly effects the activity of tyrosinase, to reducing the production of melanin, rather than reducing the production of melanin by inhibiting cell growth or tyrosinase gene expression. Because α-arbutin is a more efficient and safer whitening active substance. The Whitening Mechanism of α-Arbutin
The whitening mechanism of α-arbutin directly inhibits the activity of tyrosinase, thereby reducing the production of melanin, instead of reducing the production of melanin by inhibiting cell growth or tyrosinase gene expression. Since α-arbutin is a more efficient and safer whitening active substance, many cosmetic companies at home and abroad have adopted α-arbutin instead of β-arbutin as a whitening additive.
stability
As α-arbutin is more and more widely used in cosmetics, the research on its safety has gradually been paid attention to. α-Arbutin is a hydroquinone substance glycosylated under certain conditions. Glucose molecules in the structure of the molecule and hydroquinone form a glycoside-like bond that is easily broken. After the glycoside-like bond is broken, arbutin can be decomposed Produces hydroquinones. Hydroquinone, which belongs to phenolic compounds, is toxic, and if taken by mistake in a small amount, it will cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, tinnitus, pale complexion, etc. If it contacts the skin, it will cause toxic effects on skin cells. Hydroquinone is the starting material for the synthesis of arbutin. In addition, arbutin is decomposed under the action of enzymes present in skin cells to produce a trace amount of hydroquinone, which may cause pathological effects after a period of use. Before the use of cosmetic additives, the content of hydroquinone in the synthesized arbutin must be tested, and the necessary assessment and analysis of its safety risk must be made to ensure that the product is used under normal and reasonable conditions.
Comparing the in vitro inhibitory effect and cytotoxicity of five whitening active substances such as arbutin, vitamin C, vitamin C derivatives, hydroquinone, and kojic acid on tyrosinase activity, it was concluded that arbutin is the safest efficient.
